Humane Deer Dispatch Course
Reports of road traffic accidents involving deer in Ireland are increasing each year. Many are killed, some disappear to die later, but a significant proportion are injured and remain alive at the scene. Such animals may suffer badly and are a potential further hazard to road users. Often the only reasonable course is to humanely dispatch the animal as soon as it is safe to do so.
On Saturday November 24th, 2018 renowned Professional Scottish Deer Manager, Bradley Bourner will deliver a course to Irish Deer Commission members on how to cope with injured deer at the roadside in a humane, safe and legal manner and is relevant to members of humane dispatch schemes as well as to individuals who occasionally have to deal with deer vehicle collisions (DVCs).
Humane Deer Dispatch Scheme
In other countries there are schemes designed to cope with DVCs. Usually such schemes are coordinated by the Police who may call on nominated individuals either to assist at an incident or to take responsibility at an incident of which the Police have been advised.
Candidates who successfully complete a short exam following the course will receive a Certificate of Completion. Details of successful candidates, who give permission to share their data, will be forwarded to An Garda Siochana and National Parks and Wildlife Service who may call upon them for their assistance in the event of deer vehicle collisions (DVCs) on a voluntary basis in their local area.
