The importance of Deer Stalking and Deer Management highlighted
In recent days the Irish Deer Commission (IDC) undertook an extensive national media campaign to over 1 million radio listeners including interviews with RTE’s Morning Ireland and Drive Time programs, along with interviews on BBC and Today FM with Matt Cooper and a number of regional radio stations.
All national newspapers also covered the launch of a new Deer Poaching Awareness campaign titled “Keep Deer Poaching in Sight” supported by Government Agencies and key Stakeholder Groups, and the appointment of 28 dedicated Garda to investigate wildlife crime – it was reiterated the campaign was not designed to restrict or limit any form of legal hunting.
IDC also highlighted the important role deer stalkers play in managing deer numbers in partnership with landowners to reduce the impact deer can cause to forestry, farmland and the wider ecosystem.
It was also stated there had been an increase in intimidation/ trolling (a deliberate comment or post on social media designed to mislead or undermine an individual or organisation). The IDC would urge legitimate deer stalkers to be aware of those trolling social media and who may be associated with individuals linked to deer poaching.
