The Irish Deer Commission (IDC) held a highly successful rut watch event on Sunday October 13th, at Killarney National Park, Co Kerry in conjunction with the Department of Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht. There was a fantastic turnout with lots of rutting activity to see.
124 people registered for the event which is the largest of its kind to be held in the Park. The event was suitable for all fitness levels and a great family day out. The event also included a large display of native Irish antlers and talks by conservation ranger Peter O’Toole and IDC PRO Damien Hannigan. IDC also provided binoculars to ensure the Parks deer could be viewed at a safe distance. IDC Hon Secretary Kenneth Sewell provided complimentary Lyme Disease testing kits, tick removers and information leaflets to those in attendance to help raise awareness of Lyme Disease.
IDC chairman William Ireland made a presentation to Peter O’Toole on behalf of the Association to mark Peter’s retirement after 40 years of invaluable service. Peter’s knowledge of the Park’s deer is unmatched and he will be missed by all. Peter’s replacement, Sean Forde was also in attendance and we look forward to working with Sean, and Peter, over the coming years.
